Tela Bay sits along Honduras's north coast, tucked inside the broader Mesoamerican Reef system — the second-longest barrier reef on the planet — and it remains genuinely quieter than the Bay Islands rush further east. That relative obscurity works in the reef's favour.

Coral cover here is patchier than it once was, with some bleaching evident on shallower formations, but the mangrove lagoons feeding into the bay have stayed remarkably intact, and that connectivity shows in the fish life.

Snorkellers do well in depths of one to four metres over seagrass beds and fringing coral, where you'll find yourself sharing space with green sea turtles that seem entirely unbothered by your presence. The real draw, though, is the West Indian manatee population using the Laguna de los Micos estuary.

Sightings aren't guaranteed — you're looking for a wild animal in murky, tannin-stained water — but drifting quietly in a kayak or with a snorkel at the lagoon edge, an encounter feels entirely possible.

For scuba, local operators in Tela town run day boats to offshore reef structures dropping to around 18–25 metres, with visibility typically sitting between eight and fifteen metres depending on season and recent rainfall. Currents are mild by Caribbean standards, which makes it workable for open-water certified divers without much experience.

Liveaboards don't service this stretch — you're working entirely from day boats, and the operator infrastructure is modest but functional, with gear rental available.

Come between March and June or in September to October, when rainfall is lower and visibility improves; hurricane season peaks August through November, so plan carefully if travelling then. Open-water certification is sufficient, though snorkellers will get the most reliable value here.
