Few places in the world stop you in your tracks quite like Meteora. Rising from the plains of Thessaly, these enormous sandstone pillars seem almost impossible — and then you notice the monasteries perched on top of them, clinging to the rock as if placed there by some divine hand.

The combination of geological drama and centuries of spiritual life creates an atmosphere that is genuinely unlike anything else in Europe.

There are six active monasteries open to visitors, and each requires a separate entrance fee of around two euros. The two most visited — Great Meteoron and Varlaam — involve a decent climb up stone-cut steps, so wear sturdy shoes and pace yourself, especially in summer heat. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees must be covered, and women are generally required to wear a skirt on the premises.

Shawls and wraps are often available at the entrance if you've come unprepared.

The town of Kalabaka sits at the base of the rocks and makes a comfortable overnight base, which I'd strongly recommend. Arriving the evening before gives you the chance to walk the signposted trail between monasteries at dawn, when the light is soft, the tour buses haven't arrived yet, and the whole place feels almost impossibly quiet. By mid-morning in July and August, the more accessible monasteries fill quickly.

The train from Athens takes around four hours and drops you within walking distance of the town centre, making it an accessible day trip — though staying two nights gives you time to explore the less-visited monasteries on the eastern side of the complex.

Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures and manageable crowds; avoid visiting on a Monday when several monasteries are closed.
