Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve sits at around 1,500 metres elevation in the Tilarán Mountains, where cool mist rolls through the canopy almost every afternoon and the forest feels permanently suspended between rain and cloud.

The atmosphere is unlike anything in the lowland rainforests of Costa Rica — quieter, cooler, and somehow more intimate, with epiphyte-draped trees pressing close on either side of the trails and the calls of birds cutting through the fog.

The preserve covers roughly 10,500 hectares and is managed by the Centro Científico Tropical, which gives it a slightly more rigorous, research-focused feel than the neighbouring Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. Trails like the Chomogo and Pantanoso routes wind through primary forest and transition zones where you stand a genuine chance of spotting a resplendent quetzal, particularly between January and May when they are nesting.

Glass frogs and various herpetofauna are best searched for on night tours, which the preserve offers separately and are well worth booking in advance. The hanging bridges on the Sendero Bosque Nuboso give you a canopy-level perspective that ground trails simply cannot match.

Daily visitor numbers are capped, so booking your entrance online ahead of time is strongly recommended, especially during the dry season from December to April when trails are more accessible and wildlife sightings more reliable. The entrance fee sits around USD 25 for adults. From Santa Elena town, a 15-minute taxi or shuttle covers the 6 kilometres of unpaved road up to the gate.

Waterproof layers are non-negotiable regardless of season — the cloud forest earns its name daily.

Aim for an early morning arrival in February or March for the best quetzal sightings, and bring rubber boots if the trail conditions have been wet.
