Riding from Monteverde down to Arenal is one of those routes that earns every kilometre. You leave the cloud forest on unpaved roads that are legitimately rough — loose gravel, red mud when wet, ruts that will test your confidence on a loaded bike. The first descent off the Monteverde plateau is steep and extended, and your hands will be tired before you reach the valley floor.

Most riders split this into two days, overnighting somewhere around Tilarán, which sits at a useful midpoint and offers decent hospedajes and a few small supermarkets for resupply.

From Tilarán the route eases briefly before the road skirts the northern edge of Lago Arenal. This stretch is genuinely beautiful — water to your left, rolling green hills climbing to your right — but the wind funnels hard through this corridor, almost always blowing from east to west, which means riding west to east (Monteverde to Arenal) puts it on your back for the lake section.

Do it the other way and you will feel cheated. The surface improves considerably here, with sealed tarmac for most of the lakeside kilometres.

As you approach La Fortuna and the Arenal volcano, the road flattens and the jungle thickens. You pass lava fields from the 1992 eruption, hanging bridges in the canopy, and the odd coati wandering across the road without concern. Wildlife sightings are genuine rather than staged — toucans, sloths, howler monkeys.

La Fortuna has plentiful accommodation across all budgets and a few bike-hire shops if you need a swap or repair.

Avoid the May–November wet season; roads become treacherous above Monteverde, and the climbs turn into rivers — February through April gives you dry trails and manageable heat.
