The Skeleton Coast earns its name. This is not a place you wander into under-prepared — the Benguela Current pushes cold, nutrient-rich water northward along Namibia's shoreline, generating persistent southwesterly swells that roll in without mercy, frequent fog banks that swallow the horizon, and a coastline so low and featureless that mariners have been confused here for centuries. The rusting hulks half-buried in sand are not decoration; they are warnings.

Sailing northward from Lüderitz toward the Angolan border, you are threading a passage that demands respect and rewards it with something genuinely rare.

Wind is predominantly south to southwest, driven by the South Atlantic High — reliable but often gusty inshore, especially through the afternoon. You will be broad-reaching or running for much of the passage northward, which sounds pleasant until the swell builds on your quarter and the fog closes in. Visibility can drop to near zero without warning. Radar and AIS are not optional.

Walvis Bay is the practical hub: it has a deepwater port, reasonable provisioning, fuel, and chandlery for a southern African outpost. Lüderitz to the south is harder to approach and offers less, but the atmosphere is extraordinary — a colonial ghost town framed by dunes.

Shoreside, Namibia is stable and welcoming. Customs clearance in Walvis Bay is straightforward but unhurried; budget half a day and bring multiple copies of everything. The seal colonies at Cape Cross are staggering in scale and smell. Inland excursions into the Namib from Walvis Bay are worth every kilometre of corrugated road.

There are no meaningful charter operations based here, so arrive on your own keel or arrange a passage berth through a delivery skipper; this stretch suits experienced bluewater sailors only, not beginners.
