Pedalling north from Aswan to Luxor along the Nile Valley is one of those rides that genuinely earns its reputation through sheer contrast — ancient stone and living river, silence and chaos, smooth tarmac and stretches that'll rattle your fillings loose. Most riders spread it across four to six days, which leaves enough margin for a slower morning at a temple or an unplanned chai stop in a cane-sugar village.
The terrain is essentially flat. The Nile's floodplain gives you almost nothing in the way of climbing, so elevation gain is negligible across the whole 250 kilometres. What will wear you down instead is wind — prevailing northerlies mean riding south to north (Aswan to Luxor) puts that breeze mostly at your back, which is precisely why you book the train down and ride up.
Surface quality is genuinely mixed: the main east-bank road carries trucks and tuk-tuks and demands your full attention, while the quieter west bank offers narrower lanes through sugarcane fields, sandy shortcuts between villages, and the occasional rough patch where irrigation work has eaten the asphalt. A hybrid or touring bike with sturdy tyres handles it better than a road bike.
Accommodation runs from cheap guesthouses in Edfu and Esna to decent mid-range hotels in Kom Ombo and Luxor. Bike hire exists in both Aswan and Luxor, though quality varies wildly — inspect brakes and tyres yourself before you commit. Bring more cash than you think you need, as ATMs thin out in smaller towns.
October through February is the window you want; summer temperatures above 45°C make riding genuinely dangerous, and this is not a route to attempt without shade, abundant water, and sun protection that actually stays on in the heat.
