Few engineering achievements stop you in your tracks quite like watching a fully loaded cargo ship rise several metres through a series of water-filled chambers before continuing its journey between two oceans. The Panama Canal does exactly that, and standing at the Miraflores Locks — the most accessible viewing point from Panama City — you feel the genuine scale of the thing in a way no photograph really captures.

The Miraflores Locks visitor centre is the easiest starting point, located roughly 10 kilometres from the city centre in the Ancón area. Entry costs around USD 20 for adults, which includes access to the observation deck, a decent museum covering the canal's construction history, and a restaurant with a view over the locks.

Ship transits don't follow a strict tourist schedule, so checking the Canal Authority's live transit schedule online before you visit is worth the five minutes it takes — you can time your arrival to coincide with a large Panamax vessel moving through. The sight of something that enormous fitting through with barely a metre to spare on each side is quietly extraordinary.

Crowds build up on weekends and when cruise passengers are bused in during the morning, so arriving early on a weekday gives you a calmer experience. For a broader perspective on the canal's full length, the Gatún Locks near Colón offer a different angle, though that requires a longer trip and a bit more planning.

The Cinta Costera waterfront in Panama City also has informational panels and views toward the Pacific entrance if you want a free alternative.

Bring sun protection — the observation deck is largely exposed — and plan your visit for the dry season between December and April when heat is more manageable and skies are clearer.
