Postojna Cave is one of those places that genuinely earns its reputation. Stretching over 24 kilometres beneath the Karst region of southwestern Slovenia, it is among the largest cave systems in Europe, and walking — or rather, riding — through it feels like entering another world entirely. The scale is staggering: cathedral-like chambers, curtains of stalactites, and pale-white formations called cave coral that look almost too delicate to be real.

The visit begins with a narrow-gauge electric train that whisks you roughly five kilometres into the mountain, which is a thrill in itself.

From there, you walk a guided loop of about two kilometres through the most dramatic sections, passing the famous Concert Hall — a chamber so vast it has hosted live performances — and the transparent olm, a cave-dwelling salamander so strange it was once thought to be a baby dragon. The guided tour lasts roughly 90 minutes and runs in multiple languages throughout the day.

Crowds are the main challenge here. Summer weekends, particularly July and August, bring coachloads of visitors from Trieste, Ljubljana, and beyond, and the cave entrance area can feel quite congested. Shoulder season — April to June, or September to October — offers a far more relaxed experience. Inside, the temperature holds steady at around 8–10°C year-round, so bring a proper jacket regardless of what the weather is doing outside.

Ticket prices start at around €29 for adults; book online in advance during peak months to secure your preferred tour time.

Getting here from Ljubljana takes roughly an hour by car or direct bus; the cave is signposted clearly from the town centre and has ample parking on site.
