Puracé sits at the kind of altitude where your lungs remind you they exist. The park straddles a dramatic gradient from tangled cloud forest up through open páramo, finishing at the smoking cone of Volcán Puracé itself — and that habitat transition is precisely what makes the birding so rewarding.

You'll work through dripping polylepis woodland, past sulphur springs that vent steam across the trail, and out onto wind-scoured grassland studded with frailejones. It's cold, often wet, and genuinely beautiful.

The star draws are the hummingbirds. Colourful Puffleg and Rainbow-bearded Thornbill both occur in the upper zones, and patience at flowering patches along the main trail to the crater will usually produce good views of both. Bearded Guan turns up in the forested lower sections, most reliably in early morning when they're moving through the canopy edge.

Black-and-chestnut Eagle is the bird you're hoping for rather than counting on — scan the ridgelines at dawn, and keep scanning.

Access runs from Popayán, roughly 45 kilometres to the west, which gives you a solid range of accommodation from budget hostels to comfortable guesthouses. The park entrance is straightforward by road, and most birders day-trip from the city, though basic lodging exists nearer the park boundary.

Registered local guides from Popayán know the trail timing well and are worth hiring, particularly for the upper elevation zones where conditions shift quickly and trail junctions aren't always obvious.

Bring serious layering — temperatures drop sharply above 3,500 metres even in the dry season — and rubber boots are genuinely useful after rain, not just a precaution.

Best months are December through March and July through August; avoid the wetter shoulder months if you want consistent visibility above the treeline.
