Sanganeb sits roughly 25 kilometres northeast of Port Sudan, and the moment you drop over the wall at the northern plateau, you understand why this place has been talked about in hushed reverence since Hans Hass filmed here in the 1950s. The atoll rises from deep water as a near-perfect oval, and that isolation is precisely what has kept it in extraordinary condition.

Visibility regularly stretches beyond 30 metres, the walls are genuinely vertical, and hard coral coverage is as dense as anywhere I've dived in the Red Sea.

Depths run from a shallow lagoon suitable for snorkellers at 3–5 metres down to beyond 60 metres on the outer walls, where you're well into advanced territory. The north-facing plateau at 10–20 metres is where most of the action concentrates — grey reef sharks, whitetip and hammerhead sharks patrol with little concern for you, and manta rays are a genuine expectation rather than a hope during winter months.

Schooling barracuda, Napoleon wrasse, and resident turtle populations add to the picture. Currents can be strong and directional, particularly on the eastern and western passages, so solid buoyancy control matters.

Logistics are more involved than most Red Sea destinations. Political considerations around Sudan mean you should research current visa and travel advisories carefully before booking. The practical reality is that nearly all serious diving here happens via liveaboard out of Port Sudan, since day-boat infrastructure is limited and accommodations ashore are basic. A small number of Egyptian and Sudanese operators run trips, but availability fluctuates depending on regional stability.

Best visited October through April when seas are calmer and manta ray sightings peak; Advanced Open Water certification is the realistic minimum for the wall dives.
