Few places on earth deliver what the Serengeti actually promises. Stretching across roughly 14,750 square kilometres of open savannah, kopje-studded plains, and acacia woodland in northern Tanzania, this is wildlife watching at a scale that genuinely takes your breath away.

The sheer density of animals — lions sprawled across termite mounds, elephants moving in slow procession, cheetahs scanning the grass from low branches — makes every game drive feel cinematic without trying to be.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is the drawcard most visitors plan around, and for good reason. Between July and October, massive herds move through the northern Serengeti near the Mara River, and the river crossings — chaotic, brutal, and extraordinary — are something you simply cannot unsee. The southern plains around Ndutu see calving season from January to March, which brings its own quieter drama.

Outside these windows the park is less crowded and often cheaper, though wildlife remains exceptional year-round.

Getting here typically means flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha, then either taking a charter flight to one of the airstrips inside the park (the fastest and most comfortable option) or joining a road transfer through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Budget at least three nights inside the park — two nights is workable but always feels rushed.

Entrance fees are paid in USD and run around $70 per person per day for non-residents; lodge costs vary wildly depending on how close you want to be to the action.

Pack neutral-coloured, lightweight layers — mornings on the plains are genuinely cold before the sun climbs, and afternoons can be fierce. Avoid the long rains in April and May when some roads become impassable and several camps close entirely.
