Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of those places that genuinely stops you in your tracks. Located in the Al Rawdah district of Abu Dhabi, it's among the largest mosques in the world, and the scale of it — the 82 domes, the 1,000-plus columns, the courtyard that seems to stretch endlessly — doesn't fully register until you're standing inside it.

The architecture draws on Moroccan, Mughal, and Ottoman influences, blending them into something that feels wholly its own. At night, when the exterior glows white and gold against the sky, it's particularly breathtaking.

Admission is free, and the mosque welcomes non-Muslim visitors every day except Friday mornings, when it's reserved for prayers. The main prayer hall houses one of the world's largest hand-knotted carpets and a chandelier dripping with Swarovski crystals — details that sound excessive on paper but somehow work beautifully in person.

Guided tours are available at no cost and are genuinely worth joining; they give context that transforms the visit from sightseeing into something more meaningful.

Dress code is strictly enforced at the entrance and non-negotiable. Women must cover their hair, arms, and legs fully; men need long trousers and covered shoulders. Abayas are provided free of charge if you arrive underprepared, so there's no excuse to miss out. Crowds are manageable on weekday mornings, though weekends and public holidays can get very busy.

Getting there is straightforward — taxis and rideshares from central Abu Dhabi take around 15 minutes, and public bus routes also connect the city.

Visit on a clear weekday morning for the best light on the white marble, and arrive before 10am to beat both the heat and the tour groups.
