Skopje Zoo sits inside the sprawling City Park, a short walk or taxi ride from the old bazaar district, and the setting — mature plane trees, dappled shade, the Vardar River nearby — is genuinely pleasant even when the zoo itself shows its age. Founded in 1926, it is one of the older zoological collections in the western Balkans, and you can feel that history in some of the enclosures.

A number of the older concrete paddocks are tight by modern standards, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

That said, the zoo holds some animals worth travelling to see. The Balkan lynx is the standout: one of the world's rarest felids, endemic to this corner of Europe and critically endangered, it is rarely exhibited anywhere.

Whether this individual serves a meaningful conservation role is debatable — Skopje Zoo is not widely publicised as a coordinated breeding programme participant — but seeing the animal in the flesh is quietly affecting. Wolves and bears occupy larger naturalistic enclosures toward the back of the grounds, and the river otters are reliably active if you catch the morning feeding around ten o'clock.

Lions are present, though their enclosure is on the smaller side.

At twelve hectares, the zoo is comfortably covered in two to three hours. Shade is reasonable given the park setting, but summers in Skopje are brutally hot — surface temperatures on exposed paths climb fast by midday in July and August. Pushchairs are manageable on most paths. Entrance fees are modest by European standards. Weekends draw local families and can feel crowded near the big cat area.

Go early on a weekday morning in spring or autumn and bring water; the zoo suits curious older children and anyone with a specific interest in Balkan wildlife.
