Getting to Song Kol feels like earning something. The lake sits at 3,016 metres, and whichever of the half-dozen passes you choose to reach it, you'll spend real time in the saddle grinding up loose gravel switchbacks before the plateau opens and the water appears — vast, intensely blue, and ringed by rolling summer pasture.
Most riders approach from Kochkor to the north, taking two to three days for the full loop, with the steepest climbing concentrated in the first day's push through the Moldo-Ashuu or Kalmak-Ashuu passes, each gaining roughly 1,200–1,500 metres from the valley floor.
The surface is honest gravel throughout — compact and rideable in dry conditions, but the kind that turns genuinely sticky after rain, so tyre choice matters. Bring 40 mm or wider rubber and expect some hike-a-bike sections near the passes if the track has been churned by cattle or recent weather.
There are no sealed roads once you leave Kochkor, no bike lanes, and minimal traffic beyond shepherds on horseback and the occasional Soviet-era UAZ truck.
Accommodation is entirely yurt camps dotted around the lakeshore, run by Kyrgyz nomadic families who will feed you mutton, kymyz, and flatbread regardless of what time you roll in. Some camps can be pre-booked through CBT (Community Based Tourism) offices in Kochkor or Naryn; others you simply find. Bring enough cash for the full trip, as there are no ATMs beyond Kochkor.
Bike hire is limited and low-quality in the region, so bring your own or rent a decent hardtail in Bishkek before heading south.
June to mid-September is your window — outside those months, snowpack closes the passes and temperatures at the lake drop well below freezing overnight.
