Sydney is one of those cities that genuinely earns its reputation. The harbour is the heart of everything here — ferries criss-cross the water between Circular Quay, Manly, and Watsons Bay, and simply riding one at golden hour costs next to nothing and delivers one of the great urban views on earth. The Opera House and Harbour Bridge are iconic for good reason, but the city has far more texture than its postcard images suggest. The neighbourhoods are where Sydney really reveals itself. Surry Hills and Newtown are dense with good eating — think natural wine bars, Vietnamese pho, and wood-fired pizza sitting side by side. Paddington has the boutiques and terrace houses; Glebe has the weekend markets and second-hand bookshops. If you stay in the CBD you'll miss most of this. Look for accommodation in Darlinghurst or Potts Point instead — you'll be close to the action without paying Circular Quay prices. The beaches are exceptional and surprisingly accessible. Bondi is famous and worth seeing, but Coogee and Manly are less frantic and still stunning. The coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee takes around two hours and passes sea pools, sandstone cliffs, and ocean baths that feel genuinely wild. Take it on a weekday if you can. Getting around is manageable with an Opal card, which covers trains, buses, and ferries on one tap-on system. The train to the airport is efficient and avoids the notorious taxi surge pricing. Be aware that Sydney is expensive by any measure — coffee, accommodation, and eating out will add up fast, so budget accordingly. Sydney differs from Melbourne most noticeably in its physical drama — the water, the light, the outdoor pull. Melbourne has the laneways and the culture; Sydney has the harbour and the sun. Both are worth your time, but Sydney tends to hit harder on arrival. Visit between October and April for warm weather, but expect larger crowds over December and January.
