Out in Hino, about an hour west of Shinjuku on the Keio Line, Tama Zoological Park sprawls across 52 hectares of wooded hillside in a way that feels genuinely spacious — a deliberate contrast to the dense city you left behind. This is Japan's largest zoo by area, and the terrain shows it. Paths wind uphill through tree cover, which means welcome shade in summer but tired legs by early afternoon, so wear proper shoes and pace yourself. The Sumatran tigers are the standout draw, housed in a generous open-air habitat that allows real distance between animal and fence — nothing like the cramped old-style enclosures you find at smaller prefectural parks. The African Savanna zone puts lions, giraffes and zebras into a shared landscape visible from a slow-moving lion bus that loops through the enclosure, which is a genuinely distinctive experience and worth timing carefully as queues build fast after 11am. Chimpanzees occupy a large social habitat and are reliably active in the mornings. Tama has a well-regarded insect house — the Insectarium — which is detailed, well-labelled and quietly fascinating for adults as much as children. The park participates in regional breeding programmes for endangered species including Amur leopard cats, which gives it some conservation credibility beyond the spectacle. Pushchairs handle the main paths reasonably well, though the gradient rules out some shortcuts. Annual visitor numbers sit around 800,000, so weekends in spring and during school holidays get crowded at the lion bus stop and around the African zone. Weekday mornings in autumn hit a sweet spot: cooler air, active animals, and manageable crowds. Bring water, a light layer for the shaded sections, and allow a full day.
