Tingo María sits in a crease of the eastern Andes where the cloud forest tumbles down into humid lowland jungle, and the birding feels genuinely unfinished — in the best possible way.

The park spans roughly 600 to 1800 metres of Yungas habitat, meaning a single morning walk can take you from tangled riverside thicket up through mossy epiphyte-draped slopes, with the light and the bird activity shifting constantly as you climb. Trails are rough and often muddy; rubber boots are not optional.

Dawn is when it counts. The forest comes alive before sunrise with antbirds, tanagers, and the various hermits working the understorey. Koepcke's Hermit is reasonably findable along shaded forest edge if you wait near flowering heliconias, while the Lanceolated Monklet demands patience — it sits motionless on mid-level perches and you will almost certainly walk past your first one.

The Scarlet-banded Barbet is the jewel that draws serious listers; it was described only in 1998 and remains poorly known, most reliably encountered higher up in the canopy where fruiting trees concentrate activity. Blue-headed Macaws move in noisy, fast-moving pairs and are more reliably seen from open clearings near the Huallaga River corridor.

The Cave of the Owls — Cueva de las Lechuzas — is a reliable late-afternoon stop for Oilbirds, which roost and nest inside in impressive numbers. It is accessible and genuinely spectacular.

Local guides can be arranged in Tingo María town, though English-speaking specialists are rare; Spanish or a bilingual birding guide booked in advance is strongly recommended. Accommodation in town is basic but adequate.

Pack rubber boots, a quality scope, and insect repellent; visit May through October during the drier months to keep trail conditions manageable.
