Universal Studios Hollywood
Los Angeles, USAnature
Universal Studios Hollywood sits in Universal City, just north of Hollywood proper, and it pulls off something genuinely impressive — it's a working film studio and a full-scale theme park at the same time. The Studio Tour alone is worth the price of admission, taking you through actual production backlots where you'll see sets from films that are probably already familiar to you, plus a handful of theatrical set pieces that range from cheesy fun to legitimately spectacular.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the park's centrepiece, and it earns the hype. Hogsmeade village is remarkably well-realised, the butterbeer is cold and sweet, and the rides — particularly Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure equivalent here — are genuinely thrilling rather than just nostalgia bait. The park is smaller than its Orlando counterpart, which is either a relief or a disappointment depending on your expectations. You can cover most of it in a single full day if you arrive early and move purposefully.
Crowds are the main challenge. School holidays and weekends see queues stretching well past an hour for the headline attractions. The Universal Express pass cuts those waits significantly and is worth considering if your time is tight. The park sits on a hillside, so you'll be walking inclines all day — comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. Getting there is straightforward on the Metro B Line to Universal City station, which deposits you at the bottom of the hill via a short escalator ride. Parking is expensive if you drive.
Go on a weekday in late January or February for the lightest crowds, bring a light jacket since the upper lot can get surprisingly cool in the evenings, and download the app before you arrive to track live wait times.
