Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum sits on Museumplein in the heart of Amsterdam's museum quarter, and it delivers something genuinely moving — not just a collection of famous paintings, but a coherent, chronological story of a man's life told through his own hand.

Walking through the floors, you watch Vincent's style shift dramatically from the dark, earthy tones of his Dutch period to the blazing yellows and swirling skies of his Arles years. Seeing *The Bedroom* or *Almond Blossom* in person, rather than on a screen or a print, is one of those quietly arresting moments that reminds you why you travel.

The building itself is clean and well organised, with each floor dedicated to a different chapter of Van Gogh's life. There's also the adjoining Kurokawa wing, which handles temporary exhibitions and tends to be excellent. Crowds can be significant, particularly in summer and on weekend afternoons, so booking your timed entry ticket online in advance is not optional — it's essential.

The museum does not reward turning up on the day and hoping for the best.

Getting there is straightforward. Trams 2 and 5 stop right on Museumplein, and the Rijksmuseum is just across the square if you want to combine visits. The neighbourhood itself — the Oud-Zuid district — is pleasant to walk through, with good cafes along Van Baerlestraat for a coffee before or after. Wear comfortable shoes, as there is quite a bit of standing and stair-climbing involved.

Audio guides are available and genuinely worth the extra few euros.

Go on a weekday morning in spring or autumn for the most comfortable experience, and book your ticket at least a week ahead during peak season.
