Virunga National Park is Africa's oldest national park and, for many travellers, its most extraordinary. Straddling the Albertine Rift in eastern DRC, it packs an almost implausible range of landscapes into a single protected area — from the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori range in the north to the steaming lava lake of Nyiragongo volcano in the south, with dense montane forest and open savannah filling the space between.
The scale and drama of the place is genuinely hard to absorb on arrival.
The wildlife encounters here are unlike anything in neighbouring Uganda or Rwanda. Mountain gorilla trekking operates out of the Mikeno sector, and while permit costs are significantly lower than across the border — around USD 400 — the security situation in North Kivu adds complexity that Rwanda simply does not have.
Forest elephants move through the Ishasha corridor, hippos crowd the Rwindi River flats, and the birdlife throughout the park is relentless in its variety. Nyiragongo itself remains one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes; the overnight trek from the park boundary takes roughly five to six hours, and the view across that churning lava lake at dusk is one of those moments that quietly rearranges your sense of scale.
Goma is the gateway city, roughly 20 kilometres south of the park's main entry points, and most visitors arrange logistics through the park's official booking platform or accredited local operators. Security assessments change frequently; always check the current advisory from your government before travelling and build flexibility into your itinerary.
The dry seasons — June to September and December to February — offer the clearest trails and best gorilla tracking conditions; bring waterproof layers regardless, as the altitude drops temperatures sharply after dark.
