Sitting at around 2,800 metres on the dramatic descent from the Andes toward Manu, Wayqecha feels genuinely remote even though it's accessible by road from Cusco. The cloud forest here is dense, dripping and tangled with moss and bromeliads, and the lodge — run by the CREES Foundation with conservation firmly at its core — sits right inside it.

You'll spend mornings walking the trails in a permanent cool mist, torch lichen brushing your shoulders, and that atmosphere alone is worth the journey before you've raised your bins once.

The Cock-of-the-Rock lek just below the lodge is one of the more reliable in the region. Turn up at first light and you'll almost certainly find several males displaying, their vivid orange plumage absurd against the green gloom. Golden-headed Quetzal takes more patience — work the fruiting trees along the main trail through mid-morning and check every branch carefully.

The Rufous-crested Coquette passes through flowering shrubs unpredictably, so keep your eyes moving. Above the lodge, short patches of Polylepis woodland reward a slow walk for Ash-breasted Tit-Spinetail and various finches. Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan tends to appear without warning, usually when you're looking at something else entirely.

The lodge has simple but comfortable rooms, good food, and knowledgeable resident guides who know where birds have been active recently — that local knowledge is genuinely useful here, not just a formality. The road from Cusco takes around four to five hours and can be rough in wet conditions.

Dry season, May to October, gives you cleaner roads and more stable mornings; bring a waterproof layer regardless, rubber boots for the muddier trails, and insect repellent for the lower sections near Manu.
