Zanzibar Reefs

The reefs ringing Zanzibar sit in warm, shallow Indian Ocean water that rarely drops below 26°C, and on a good day visibility stretches to 20–25 metres across gardens of hard and soft coral. Most sites range from 5 to 30 metres, making them genuinely accessible to both snorkellers floating above the shallows and open-water divers pushing deeper along the wall sections off Mnemba Atoll.

Currents vary considerably — the inside channel sites are calm and forgiving, while the ocean-facing walls at Mnemba can run strong enough that you'll want some drift-diving experience before committing.

The marine life is the real draw. Whale sharks appear seasonally, particularly around Pemba Channel to the north, and patient snorkellers near Nungwi and Kendwa regularly share water with green and hawksbill turtles. The reef fish diversity is genuinely impressive — clouds of anthias, lionfish tucked under ledges, octopus hunting the rubble zones, and decent Napoleon wrasse sightings at depth.

Dolphins are reliable off Kizimkazi in the south, though the boat interactions there are worth scrutinising before you book.

Reef condition is honestly mixed. Mnemba Atoll is the healthiest site and is now protected under a conservation agreement, but sections of reef closer to Stone Town and popular snorkel spots show clear anchor and visitor damage. Bleaching events have hit Zanzibar in recent years, so temper your expectations on some shallower sections.

Logistics lean heavily toward day boats rather than liveaboards — there are established PADI operators in Nungwi, Paje, and Stone Town offering two-tank dives at reasonable prices. A liveaboard to Pemba Island is possible but requires advance planning through specialist operators.

Go between October and March for the calmest seas and best visibility; open-water certification is sufficient for most sites.
