About this tour
Spend 90 minutes in a traditional Kyoto townhouse learning to fold and cook gyoza from scratch. Your English-speaking instructor guides you through the techniques that transformed this Chinese-origin dumpling into a Japanese staple, whilst sharing stories of samurai heritage and local food culture. Roll up your sleeves, get your hands floury, and walk away with both a skill and a stomach full of dumplings you've made yourself.

What to expect
You'll arrive at an authentic wooden townhouse where your instructor meets you and hands over an apron. The first half covers dumpling anatomy—how to wrap, pleat, and seal each one—with plenty of hands-on practice. You'll watch a demo, then fold your own batch whilst picking up tips on thickness and firmness. Once everyone's prepped their dumplings, they hit the pan or steamer. The second half is eating: you'll taste what you've made, paired with simple sides and sauce. If you fancy it, there's a chance to pose in samurai gear for photos before heading out.
Good to know
Public transport links are nearby; you'll need to arrange your own way there. All tools and ingredients are supplied. Prams and strollers welcome; infants must sit on an adult's lap. Wear clothes you don't mind getting flour on.
