Four days riding the Ha Giang Loop on the back of a motorbike with a local driver, tackling some of northern Vietnam's most dramatic mountain passes and canyons. You'll cross the Gate of Heaven, navigate the serpentine Tham Ma Pass, visit the otherworldly Moon Surface landscape, and descend into Ma Pi Leng canyon—Vietnam's deepest at 1000 metres. Nights are spent in Hmong villages where you'll eat with families and hear stories over local rice wine. This is raw, challenging terrain for travellers ready to sit with the landscape rather than observe it from a coach window.

What to expect

You'll ride pillion behind an experienced local rider for 4 days through Ha Giang's mountain spine. Days involve steady riding along cliff-edge passes, stopping at viewpoints where the landscape opens into vast valleys and distant ridges. The roads are real—narrow, winding, sometimes rough—and the altitude shifts noticeably. Evenings happen in village homestays where you'll eat family meals and sleep in basic but clean rooms. You're not touring; you're moving through the landscape deliberately and slowly enough to notice how villages sit on hillsides, how terraces follow contours, how light changes the mountains hourly. Expect dust, wind, beautiful discomfort.

Good to know

Wear long sleeves and trousers for sun and safety. Bring sunscreen and a light rain jacket. The bike does all the work, but sitting for hours requires core strength. Not suitable if pregnant. Public transport to Hanoi departure point is available. Service animals welcome. Infants must sit on an adult's lap.
