What to expect

An early wake-up call (typically midnight departure from Bali) to catch the ferry across to Java. You'll reach the volcano base by dawn and begin the trek uphill in darkness with a torch, aiming to summit by sunrise. The Bluefire—glowing sulphur vents—are most visible in the pre-dawn darkness. Once daylight arrives, you'll trek the crater rim, descend into the crater itself, and witness miners at work hauling heavy baskets of raw sulphur. The air is sharp and acidic; your gas mask matters. Expect steep terrain, thin mountain air, and a full day of physical exertion before the return ferry to Bali that evening.

Good to know

Start fitness should be moderate to good; high altitude and steep inclines challenge the unfit. Pregnant travellers and those with spinal issues should not go. Wear sturdy hiking boots, warm layers (it's cold at altitude), and pack light. Minimum two people per booking. Bring your passport details at booking for ferry clearance.
