Learn traditional brush technique from a master instructor with nearly three decades of experience in this 90-minute session at a Shinsaibashi hotel. You'll master the fundamentals of Japanese calligraphy, select from 16 popular kanji characters, and create a framed artwork to take home. What to expect

You'll start with a talk about Japanese writing systems and proper brush handling, learning how each tool—brush, ink, inkstone—works. After grasping the basics, you'll pick a kanji character that appeals to you and spend time practising strokes before your final piece. Once you're satisfied, you'll write it on proper paper, sign your name, and it goes straight into a display frame. The session closes with green tea and sweets whilst you admire your work and take a photo.
