About this tour

Learn to make coconut oil the way it's been done in Delodsema Village for generations. You'll work alongside your Balinese host family in their home north of Ubud, moving through the traditional pressing and extraction process from start to finish. Expect to spend 90 minutes on the oil itself, then explore village life while it cures. You leave with a bottle of your own coconut oil and the knowledge of how to recreate it at home.

Highlights

  • Press coconut milk through traditional cloth and heat methods
  • Take home a litre of coconut oil you've made yourself
  • Village walk past traditional Balinese homes and daily routines
  • Coconut scrub massage while waiting for oil to set
  • Welcome drink of fresh coffee or herbal tea

What to expect

Your host will greet you with tea or coffee at their home. You'll start the oil-making process immediately—cracking, grating, and pressing coconut meat to extract milk, then heating and straining it until oil separates. The work is hands-on and a bit messy. While the oil cools, you'll receive a coconut scrub massage and walk through the village with your host, seeing how the 50 families here live day to day. Village paths are uneven in places. By the end of the session, your oil will be ready to bottle and take home.

Good to know

The experience lasts roughly three hours total. Transport from central Ubud costs 350,000 IDR return and isn't included. Wear clothes you don't mind getting coconut on. The activity involves standing, repetitive hand movements, and isn't suitable for those with serious heart conditions. Bring a small bag for your oil bottle.
