What to expect

You'll be collected from your Bali hotel well before dawn and driven to Mount Ijen's trailhead. The ascent takes roughly two hours at a steady pace—expect loose volcanic rock, sulphur fumes, and steep sections. At the crater rim, you'll encounter the famous blue fire: luminescent sulphur igniting as it burns down the mountainside, visible primarily in darkness. The crater itself is acidic and hostile; your guide keeps you at safe distances. Temperatures drop noticeably at altitude.
