What to expect

You'll enter via airport-style security; queues can stretch over 30 minutes depending on daily throughput. Once inside, you're free to roam at your own pace. The main chamber is vast and surprisingly intimate, with the coffered ceiling drawing your eye upward to the open sky. Bring comfortable shoes; the marble floors are smooth and can be slippery. Note that this remains a functioning church, so you may encounter Mass or private prayers in progress. Modest dress is required—cover shoulders and knees to avoid refusal of entry, particularly during services or special events.
