What to expect

You'll board a quiet train carriage and travel to the mountain's base with someone who knows the rail system inside out. The hike itself is moderate—ninety minutes at an easy pace on well-kept paths. Food stops along the way are simple and local. At Yakuoin Temple, silence and space let you settle. The chairlift down takes the strain off tired legs. Finally, the onsen and sauna give your body proper recovery. The whole day loops back to Shinjuku by early evening. Weather may shuffle the route or swap the chairlift for a walking descent, but your guide adjusts as needed.

Good to know

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring rain gear for wet weather. The spa fee (around ¥1,100) is separate. Some temple shops take cash only; most places take cards or IC cards. This tour isn't suitable for spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular fitness. Moderate fitness required.
