What to expect

You'll start at Nagano Station and head to Jigokudani, where a 1.6-kilometre forest trail leads to natural hot springs where macaques gather. The walk takes around an hour and involves steady uphill sections. Afterwards, you'll drive to Obuse for lunch at a local restaurant—expect hearty dishes prepared with regional produce. The afternoon includes a brewery visit and sake tasting, followed by free time to wander Obuse's quieter streets and shop. Those departing at 8:45 AM can add Zenkoji Temple; the 9:35 AM departure goes straight back to Nagano Station. Monkey sightings are reliable but never guaranteed, as they remain wild animals subject to seasonal movements.

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear or bring cleats for icy winter conditions. Moderate fitness required—the forest trail is steady uphill. Not suitable for spinal injuries, pregnancy, or poor cardiovascular health. Tours depart on time; arrive ten minutes early.
