About this tour

When Sarah from our team suited up for the South Maui Shore Dive, we found ourselves in the calm, reef-studded waters off Wailea and Makena—a stretch of coast that feels worlds away from the busier tourist zones. This three-hour certified-only dive takes you out with a pro guide to hunt for turtles, rays, sharks, and the kind of dense tropical reef life that makes South Maui's underwater rep stick. You get kit, snaps of the day, and snacks thrown in. It's a solid half-day for divers who want creatures and colour without the full liveaboard commitment.

Highlights

  • Turtles cruising reef edges; easier spotting than many dive sites
  • Two-dive option available; bump up depth and bottom time for fee
  • Professional guide handles logistics; you focus on the marine life
  • Included underwater photos capture your best moments
  • Calm shore entry and shallow reefs suit a range of cert levels
  • Wailea/Makena waters typically clear and biodiverse
  • All gear supplied; no rental hassles or extra hire fees

What to expect

You'll meet at the dive shop, run through a safety briefing (standard stuff—hand signals, buddy checks, ascent rates), then kit up with supplied gear. Entry is from the shore, so no boat ride; Sarah noted the walk to the water was straightforward and the reef starts within metres. Expect a guided descent to moderate depth with plenty of time scanning reef crevices and walls for the advertised wildlife. The pace is leisurely—this isn't a race. Morning dives tend to have better visibility and lighter crowds of other divers.

The underwater scenery is classic Hawaiian reef: dense coral heads, small caves harbouring eels, rays cruising sandy patches, and fish everywhere. Turtles appear regularly enough that guides know where to look. If you nail the first dive and want a second site, you can add it on the day (though it'll cost extra). The whole thing wraps in about three hours. Sarah reckoned it felt less rushed than boat dives and gave you time to actually enjoy being underwater rather than constantly managing logistics.

Good to know

The good

This is a proper shore dive for certified divers who want reef life without boat time or seasickness risk. The inclusion of photos, all kit, and a guide means zero hassle on your end—just show up. Wailea/Makena waters are warm and forgiving year-round. If you're a casual cert holder who hasn't dived in a while, the shallow reef and guided pace will ease you back in.

The not-so-good

You need current certification—no open-water lessons on this one. Expect the site to have other divers, especially mornings. The three-hour window is tight if you're a slow-moving explorer; you're not lingering on one reef head for 20 minutes. A second dive will bump your cost noticeably. Don't fly within 24 hours of diving. Bring your own snorkel gear if you're picky about fit—supplied stuff varies. The walk to the water is short but exposed; sunscreen goes on first.

Practical info

Inclusions are guide, all equipment, snacks, drinks, and photos. You pay extra for a second dive and tips. Transport to/from the site isn't covered. Shoe size, height, and weight must be provided at booking (for wetsuit and BCD fit). Children need an adult. Not suitable if pregnant or with cardiac concerns. Moderate fitness required.
