What to expect

After meeting your guide at Takayama Station, you'll drive into the Gokayama valley. First stop is Ainokura, where you'll spend an hour making washi using traditional methods—expect to get your hands wet and take home a finished sheet. Next, Suganuma offers a slower pace: browse the modest museum, then wander quiet lanes between vernacular houses. By mid-afternoon you'll reach Shirakawa-go, the most visited of the three. You have freedom to enter one farmhouse interior, climb to the lookout for panoramic shots, or simply sit and observe. The guide provides historical context throughout; you'll need moderate fitness for walking on uneven terrain.

Bring lunch or eat before departing Takayama—no meals are provided. Wear comfortable walking shoes; village paths are steep and sometimes slippery in wet weather. Prams work on main roads but not village lanes. Infants sit on laps during transfers. Summer heat and winter snow both affect comfort; dress accordingly.
