About this tour

Step into a traditional tea room in Okinawa and learn the art of chanoyu from an experienced instructor. You'll dress in a simple kimono, study the ritual gestures and tools, sample local sweets, then prepare and drink your own bowl of matcha. This 75-minute session accommodates groups of two to eight and welcomes participants of all mobility levels. Book at least three days ahead.

Highlights

  • Prepare matcha in an authentic tea room using proper technique
  • Wear traditional kimono during the full experience
  • Taste Okinawan and Japanese sweets with your tea
  • Learn the philosophy behind each utensil and movement
  • Take home an origami crane as a souvenir

What to expect

Your instructor will guide you through the entrance protocol and explain the purpose of each tool before you enter the main hall. You'll sit at tables and chairs (Ryu-Rei style) rather than on the floor, making it accessible for those who struggle with seiza position. First comes refreshment with regional sweets, then the instructor demonstrates proper handling of the whisk, bowl, and ladle. You'll have time to ask questions and practise the movements. The session concludes when you whisk and taste your own matcha. Photography is permitted throughout.
