Learn taiko drumming directly from an internationally recognised instructor in this 90-minute Tokyo workshop. You'll master foundational techniques, rhythm patterns, and perform both traditional and contemporary pieces. Eva, a Cornell University taiko founder and Tokyo University of the Arts award winner, guides you through hands-on training with professional drums, then presents a short performance and historical context. You'll leave with a personalised video of yourself playing.

What to expect

You'll arrive at a dedicated drum space and begin with foundational training—proper posture, grip, and striking techniques. Eva then progresses to rhythm work, building your confidence with the instrument. In the second half, you'll learn an actual taiko piece, blending classical and modern styles. Expect physical engagement; drumming demands coordination and stamina. Eva performs a brief demonstration mid-session, contextualising what you're learning within taiko's broader history. The workshop wraps with filming your own performance, which you take home as a keepsake.

Moderate fitness is needed; taiko is physically demanding. Eva supplies all drums and sticks. Sessions support visual, audio, mobility, and neurodivergent accessibility. Infants can attend in prams. Public transport is nearby. Gratuities are not included.
