When Tom from our team ran this early-morning snorkel off Waikiki, we were on the water before sunrise to catch the turtles at Turtle Canyon. It's a tight two-hour loop from Ala Wai boat harbour — you'll motor past Diamond Head toward the reef where green sea turtles hang out while smaller fish pick their shells clean. The crew keeps an eye out for Hawaiian spinner dolphins on the return leg, and it's genuinely a good shout for jet-lagged families or couples wanting to beat the beach crowds. The boat's small, the crew knows the spot well, and if conditions align, you'll see real wildlife instead of just hope.

What to expect

You'll meet at Ala Wai boat harbour while it's still dark, then head out toward Diamond Head as the sun comes up — it's a proper quick-fire start to the day. The boat ride to Turtle Canyon takes about 15–20 minutes; once there, the guide briefs you and you're in the water. The turtles are genuinely there (not a "maybe you'll see one" situation), floating lazily while they graze. You get maybe 30–40 minutes in the water, which is enough to watch their behaviour without exhausting you. On the way back, the crew scans for dolphins — Tom spotted a few hanging near the boat, which felt less zoo-like than you'd expect. The pace is brisk but never rushed, and the guide knows when to move on if the turtles have drifted off.
