Colombia rewards travellers willing to stray from the capital. The Caribbean coast delivers proper beaches and colonial towns without the cruise-ship crowds. Inland, the coffee region and Pacific slopes hide some of South America's richest biodiversity—jaguars, harpy eagles, poison frogs—accessible on foot with local guides who actually know what they're looking at.

Security has improved markedly. Stick to established routes and towns, and you'll encounter far fewer problems than the headlines suggest. Most travellers spend 3–4 weeks here and wish they'd booked longer.

Food is honest: arepas, fresh fish, tropical fruit you've never heard of. Cocaine tourism is real but easily avoided—focus on the landscape, the people, and the coffee instead.

Highlights

  1. Tayrona National Park & Caribbean CoastJungle meets sea. Trails drop steeply to empty beaches fringed by forest; camp or day-walk from nearby towns.
  2. Sierra Nevada de Santa MartaSix-day trek to isolated Indigenous communities and alpine meadows; steep, muddy, rewarding. Acclimatise first.
  3. Coffee Region (Risaralda & Quindío)Stay on working fincas, pick beans, drink it fresh. Green hills everywhere. Less touristy than you'd expect.
  4. Los Nevados National ParkHigh-altitude páramo and glaciers. Day hikes from the coffee zone; weather is unpredictable, go prepared.
  5. Chocó RainforestWettest place on Earth. Humpback whales (Jul–Nov), jaguars, rivers. Requires serious commitment and decent budget.
  6. Valle del Cauca & Western RangesCloud forests, birding, cooler climate. Less visited than the north; good base for hiking and canyon exploration.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
Dec–Jan and Jul–Aug (dry-ish seasons), though 'seasons' are loose. Caribbean coast is warm year-round. Highlands get rain constantly; pack a waterproof. Avoid September–October if possible.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free. Passport valid 6+ months required. If you overstay, expect fines at the airport; don't risk it.
Is it safe?+
Safer than five years ago, but street crime happens in big cities and drug-trafficking zones exist. Don't flash valuables. Avoid travel after dark in unfamiliar areas. Stick to established routes.
How much should I budget?+
Backpacker survives on 50,000–80,000 COP/day (basics, local transport, cheap eats). Mid-range: 150,000–250,000 COP. Park fees and guided treks add up quickly.
What do I need to pack?+
Waterproof bag and rain jacket (non-negotiable). Insect repellent with DEET. Sun protection—equatorial sun burns fast. Hiking boots for jungle trails. Lightweight, quick-dry clothes for humid conditions.
