Fiji works because it doesn't pretend to be anything else. You get coral reefs that justify the trip, villages where people actually live (not perform), and a rhythm that rewires you within days. The islands are small enough to walk, scattered enough to feel remote, and connected enough that logistics aren't a nightmare.

The diving and snorkelling is genuinely world-class — this isn't marketing. The water's warm year-round, visibility is reliable, and you'll see stuff. Beyond the reef: kava ceremonies that are less touristy than you'd expect, easy island hops, and food that's fresher because the islands grow it.

It's not cheap for what you get, and the infrastructure is patchy. But if you're after actual island life rather than a resort tick-box, Fiji delivers. Go prepared to move slowly and stay longer than you planned.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
May–October is dry season and best for visibility and water conditions. November–April is wet and cyclone-prone, but fewer tourists and cheaper accommodation. Dive season is solid year-round.
Do I need a visa?+
Most Western passport holders get 4 months visa-free on arrival. Check your nationality on the official immigration website before booking — rules do change, and overstaying is taken seriously.
What's a realistic daily budget?+
Backpacker dorm and street food: FJD 80–120/day. Mid-range guesthouse and casual meals: FJD 150–250/day. Resort or upmarket accommodation: FJD 300+/day. Island transport adds 20–30% if hopping regularly.
Is it safe?+
Petty theft and bag-snatching happen in Suva and tourist areas; keep valuables secure. Violent crime against tourists is rare. Use common sense, avoid walking alone after dark, and respect local customs — you'll be fine.
What should I pack?+
Reef shoes, strong sunscreen, and a light rain jacket. Medical facilities outside the main towns are basic; bring prescription meds and travel insurance. Humidity is intense — cotton and breathable fabrics beat everything else.
