Tonga is a proper kingdom—still ruled by a reigning monarch—spread across 170 islands in the South Pacific. Most travellers skip it entirely, which is the point. You get coral reefs, humpback whales (June–October), and villages where life moves at island pace.

The country splits into three main groups: Vava'u in the north (boat hub, whale season base), Ha'apai in the middle (quieter, raw), and Tongatapu down south (capital, best infrastructure). Diving and snorkelling are the main draws; land activities are minimal but genuine.

Expect basic guesthouses, inconsistent internet, and food that relies heavily on root crops and tinned goods. It's not luxe, but that's the appeal. You're not here for five-star resorts—you're here to breathe space.

Highlights

1. Humpback whale encounters (Vava'u) — June to October: swim alongside migrating whales. Licensed operators, regulated distance, genuinely wild.
2. Vava'u Group reef diving — Coral gardens, dropoffs, rays, turtles. Dive shops scattered across the islands; visibility varies with season.
3. Ha'apai lagoon snorkelling — Shallow, transparent water. Fewer tourists. Day trips and island-hopping by local ferry or charter boat.
4. Tongatapu's Blowholes — Coastal rock formations where waves crash through natural vents. Drive or scooter from the capital.
5. Village life and local food — Stay in guesthouses, eat lu'au (coconut root-veg stew), attend Sunday church in woven mats and traditional dress.
6. Neiafu port town — Main hub on Vava'u; guesthouses, dive shops, a few bars. Walkable, low-key, genuinely friendly.
