Myanmar remains genuinely difficult to reach and that's part of its appeal. The military's grip on politics means Western governments issue travel warnings, but independent travellers still visit—often finding themselves among very few other foreigners. You'll navigate unpredictable infrastructure, unreliable maps, and a currency that's in flux.

The Golden Land trades on Buddhism. Shwedagon Pagoda dominates Yangon's skyline; smaller stupas pepper the countryside. Inle Lake draws day-trippers keen on leg-rowing fishermen and floating markets. The Mergui Archipelago remains largely undeveloped—islands with minimal facilities and minimal crowds. Get there soon, before someone decides to build resorts.

Most travellers spend two to four weeks. Visa runs are common; border crossings to Thailand, Laos, and China are possible but slow. Expect to bribe officials and haggle with transport operators. The country rewards patience and low expectations.

Highlights

  1. Shwedagon Pagoda, YangonGold-plated stupa dominating the city; arrive at sunset when crowds thin and light turns honey-coloured.
  2. Inle Lake, Shan StateFreshwater lake ringed by villages; boat tours slow and cheap, markets genuine, but expect tour buses.
  3. Mergui ArchipelagoLimestone islands with minimal development, pristine snorkelling, and almost no tourists—boat charters required.
  4. Tea plantations, Shan StateRolling hills where tea is still picked by hand; guesthouses offer farm stays and factory tours.
  5. Hkakabo Razi, Kachin StateSoutheast Asia's highest peak; heavily restricted access requires permits, permits require luck and time.
  6. Andaman Sea diving and sailingWarm water, coral gardens, few dive operators; the season is short and boats are often elderly.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
November to February (cool season). Monsoon June–October makes travel slower and roads impassable. March–May is sweltering and dusty. The Andaman islands are accessible only November–April due to rough seas.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities need one. Tourist visas (28 days) are issued in Bangkok, Penang, or Chiang Mai in 2–5 days. Applying in-country is slow and unpredictable. Visa runs to Thailand are common among long-term visitors.
How much does this actually cost?+
Backpacker budget: $15–20/day (dorm beds, street food, buses). Mid-range: $50–80/day (guesthouses, restaurants, hired transport). Comfort: $150+/day. Private boat charters to islands cost $500–1,500 depending on group size.
Is it safe?+
Petty theft and scams target tourists. Road accidents are real (buses crash). Political unrest is localised but unpredictable. Check UK/Australian travel advisories before booking. Most travellers encounter hassle, not danger.
What should I pack?+
Lightweight, modest clothing (temples require covered shoulders/knees). Sturdy shoes for rough terrain. High-SPF sunscreen. Medications you need—pharmacies stock basics but brands vary. Cash (US dollars and kyat). Boat trips need sea sickness medication and a dry bag.
