Thailand works because it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. You'll find crowded beach resorts next to remote limestone cliffs, ornate Buddhist temples alongside dive bars, and street stalls serving better food than most restaurants charge triple for. The north is cooler and greener; the south is islands and diving; Bangkok is controlled chaos with excellent public transport.

Most travellers land in Bangkok, hop to Chiang Mai for temples and trekking, then island-hop down south. The infrastructure is solid — buses are cheap and reliable, hostels cater to backpackers, and English gets you through most transactions. You won't need much money, but you will need patience with crowds and humidity.

Thailand's appeal is straightforward: genuinely affordable travel in a country that's invested in tourism without losing itself entirely. The beaches are real, the food is real, and the temples are legitimately stunning. It's busy, but it works.

Highlights

  5. Street food and night marketsBangkok and Chiang Mai stalls serve pad thai, grilled seafood, and regional curries for pocket change.
  6. Phuket and coastal townsMix of developed resort infrastructure, working fishing communities, and day-trip island access.

Everything you need to know

When should I go?+
November–February is coolest and driest. March–May is hot and humid. June–October is monsoon season — cheaper, fewer tourists, but expect rain and occasional closures. Avoid Thai holidays if you dislike crowds.
Do I need a visa?+
Visa-free entry for most Western passport holders (usually 30 days on arrival). Extend at immigration offices or cross a border and re-enter if staying longer. Check your country's embassy for current rules.
How much does it cost?+
Budget backpackers spend £8–15/day on dorms and street food; mid-range travellers spend £25–45/day with decent hotels and restaurant meals; comfortable travel is £60+/day. Alcohol and activities add cost.
Is it safe?+
Generally safe for tourists in major cities and islands. Petty theft (bags, phones) happens — use common sense. Avoid overland travel near southern borders and political demonstrations. Drink safety varies by venue.
What should I pack?+
Light, quick-dry clothing (it's hot and humid). Sturdy flip-flops, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Modest dress required for temples (covered shoulders and knees). A power adapter for Type A, B, and I plugs is handy.
