Nicaragua sits between two oceans and doesn't quite know which identity to claim — and that's its strength. Pacific-side volcanoes dominate the west; the Caribbean coast is a different country altogether, culturally and geographically. Most travellers find it cheaper than neighbours, less touristy than Costa Rica, and genuinely welcoming without the hard sell.
The country moves slowly. Infrastructure is patchy; roads range from decent to brutal. But that's partly why it still feels real. You'll share buses with locals, eat at comedores where the food is honest, and encounter far fewer tour groups than you'd expect for the sheer amount on offer.
Rain comes heavy May–November; the Pacific side is hotter and drier. Political stability has improved markedly, though petty theft and occasional gang activity remain real in certain urban areas. Come with flexibility and reasonable street sense.
