Nicaragua Travel Guide

Volcanic landscapes, Caribbean coast, budget-friendly Central America

OverviewCitiesAttractionsToursArticles

Nicaragua sits between two oceans and doesn't quite know which identity to claim — and that's its strength. Pacific-side volcanoes dominate the west; the Caribbean coast is a different country altogether, culturally and geographically. Most travellers find it cheaper than neighbours, less touristy than Costa Rica, and genuinely welcoming without the hard sell.

The country moves slowly. Infrastructure is patchy; roads range from decent to brutal. But that's partly why it still feels real. You'll share buses with locals, eat at comedores where the food is honest, and encounter far fewer tour groups than you'd expect for the sheer amount on offer.

Rain comes heavy May–November; the Pacific side is hotter and drier. Political stability has improved markedly, though petty theft and occasional gang activity remain real in certain urban areas. Come with flexibility and reasonable street sense.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to visit?+
December–April (dry season) is most reliable and least muddy. May–November is wet but greener, cheaper, and quieter. Avoid September–October if heavy rain bothers you; roads can wash out.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities get 90 days on arrival visa-free (tourist card purchased at entry). Australians, NZ, US, UK, EU all exempt. Check current policy before booking; rules shift occasionally.
How much money do I actually need daily?+
Budget backpacker: $20–30. Mid-range: $50–80. Comfortable: $120+. Food is cheap; guesthouses range wildly. Avoid petty theft and you'll stretch dollars further than Central American neighbours.
How safe is it really?+
Generally safer than headlines suggest, but petty theft and gang activity are real in León and Managua at night. Stick to traveller areas, avoid flashing goods, use registered taxis. Rural areas and islands are calmer.
What should I pack beyond the basics?+
Waterproof bag (seriously — rain is relentless). Lightweight, quick-dry clothes. Insect repellent (dengue and malaria exist; mosquitoes peak at dusk). Good shoes for mud and volcanic rock. Stomach tablets.
