Honduras punches above its weight for reef diving and snorkeling. The Bay Islands—Roatán, Utila, and Guanaja—sit atop the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-longest in the world. Visibility is consistent, sea life abundant, and dive certifications cheap. The mainland offers dense rainforest, Mayan ruins, and a less-touristed Caribbean coast than neighbours.

It's not a polished destination. Infrastructure varies wildly; roads inland are rough; petty theft happens in cities. But that's partly why it works: prices stay low, and you're not shuffling through tour-group crowds. Come for the reefs, stay for the coffee plantations, cloud forests, and surprisingly good food.

Most travellers base themselves on the Bay Islands for diving and beach time, then either fly home or venture to the mainland for hiking and ruins. The wet season (May–Nov) brings rain and choppier seas, but cheaper rooms and fewer tourists.

Highlights

  1. Roatán dive sitesWorld-class reef diving and snorkeling; PADI courses cost half Caribbean rates elsewhere.
  2. Bay Islands marine lifeNurse sharks, rays, grouper, lionfish, sea turtles, and occasional whale sharks year-round.
  3. Utila budget divingSmallest, least developed Bay Island; cheapest dives and a backpacker-friendly vibe.
  4. Mainland rainforestCloud forest hikes, howler monkeys, jaguars, and river swims in remote national parks.
  5. Copán Mayan ruinsIntricate carved stelae and altars in western Honduras; smaller and less crowded than Guatemala sites.
  6. Tela Bay coastCaribbean fishing town with decent beaches, nearby lagoons, and a laid-back alternative to the islands.

Everything you need to know

When's the best time to dive?+
Year-round, but Apr–May and Oct–Nov have calmest seas. Dry season (Dec–Mar) brings good visibility but also crowds and higher prices. Rainy season deals offset rougher swells.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free on arrival. Passport must be valid six months beyond travel. Check with your embassy; some nationalities need advance permission.
How much should I budget daily?+
$25–35 backpacker (dorm, street food, free snorkeling); $60–90 mid-range (private room, casual restaurants, one paid dive/tour); $150+ comfortable (beachfront hotel, dining out, multiple activities).
Is it safe?+
Bay Islands are safe for tourists; petty theft and mugging occur in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula—avoid at night. Mainland towns are generally quiet. Don't flash valuables; use registered taxis.
What should I pack?+
Reef-safe sunscreen, wetsuit (thin—water stays warm), medications (pharmacies limited outside cities), sturdy shoes for jungle trails, lightweight rain jacket. Bring cash in USD—ATMs in cities and islands but not reliable everywhere.
