Nigeria isn't polished. Lagos sprawls across islands connected by bridges that cost you two hours in traffic and three near-death experiences. The energy is relentless—markets roar, music pours from every corner, people move with purpose. You'll see extreme wealth and grinding poverty on the same street.

Beyond the coastal madness, there's Yoruba culture in the southwest, Hausa traditions in the north, and dense rainforests in the southeast. The national parks are under-developed and under-visited, which means fewer tourists and fewer facilities. Infrastructure is patchy; power cuts happen without warning.

Nigeria rewards preparation and flexibility. Your phone will die mid-conversation. Your taxi won't have a meter. You'll eat some of the best jollof rice of your life in someone's kitchen. If you can handle unreliable electricity and navigate without depending on Google Maps, you'll see a country most tourists skip entirely.

Everything you need to know

When should I go?+
December–February is dry and cool. March–May is hot. June–November is the rainy season; travel inland becomes difficult. Harmattan winds arrive around January and bring dust from the Sahara. Most visitors arrive in the dry season.
Do I need a visa?+
Most nationalities need a visa in advance through a Nigerian embassy or consulate. Processing takes weeks. There's no e-visa scheme. Arrive with a valid passport (six months minimum), proof of funds, and accommodation details.
What's the real budget?+
Street food and basic accommodation: $15–25/day. Mid-range hotels and restaurant meals: $50–80/day. Flights within Nigeria and taxis are expensive relative to other West African countries. Budget more than you would for Ghana or Benin.
Is it safe?+
Lagos is safe if you stay aware and avoid wandering alone at night in unfamiliar areas. Petty theft and robbery happen. The far north has genuine security concerns; check current travel advisories before going beyond Kano. Kidnapping and militant activity occur but are not a typical tourist risk.
What do I absolutely need to pack?+
Malaria prophylaxis (check with your doctor). Power bank—blackouts are frequent. Cash in Nigerian Naira and USD; card access is unreliable outside Lagos. Antibiotics and antidiarrhoeal medication. Universal power adaptor. Sun protection; the heat is intense and relentless.
