Slovakia punches above its weight. Wedged between the High Tatras mountains and the Danube plain, it's got the dramatic landscape of its neighbours without the tourist gridlock. Medieval town centres are genuinely intact—not reconstructed for Instagram.
The Slovak sense of humour is dry and the food is proper: broth, dumplings, and pork done right. You'll find yourself in a hiking boot one day and a baroque church the next, often in the same afternoon.
It's cheaper than Austria or Czechia, less crowded, and the locals don't expect you to speak Slovak. English works in cities; older generations speak Russian or German. Start in Bratislava if you must—it's lean and worth 1–2 days—but the real Slovakia is in the mountains, caves, and villages beyond.
