Aokigahara is one of those places that stays with you long after you've left. Spreading across roughly 35 square kilometres at the northwestern base of Mt Fuji, this ancient lava forest grew atop the hardened flows of the 864 AD Jogan eruption, and the geology shapes everything about it. The ground is dramatically uneven, riddled with cavities, root tangles, and hollows that drop without warning. Trees grow in contorted shapes, their roots clawing over bare volcanic rock for purchase. The overall effect is genuinely otherworldly — dense, quiet, and dimly lit even on bright days. Two commercial caves within the forest are open to visitors: Fugaku Wind Cave and Narusawa Ice Cave, both well signposted and accessible from the main forest road. Entrance fees are modest, around 350 yen per cave, and both reward you with cool air and dramatic ice formations that persist year-round thanks to the insulating lava. Beyond the tourist trails, the forest has a well-documented reputation tied to Japanese folklore and tragedy, so expect a sombre undertone that you won't find in neighbouring Fuji Five Lakes parks. Wildlife is understated here — you are more likely to hear Japanese bush warblers and spot fox tracks in the mud than encounter anything dramatic. The magnetic iron content in the lava rock can interfere with compass readings and phone GPS, so carry a physical map if you plan to venture off marked paths. The nearest gateway is Fujikawaguchiko, roughly 30 minutes by bus, with services running from Kawaguchiko Station. Late spring through early autumn offers the best conditions; come in autumn for vivid foliage colour framing the lava fields, and bring waterproof boots regardless of forecast.
