The Fastnet course runs roughly 608 miles from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, west across the Celtic Sea, around the lonely lighthouse on Fastnet Rock off County Cork, and back to Plymouth.

Even in high summer you are dealing with the North Atlantic in one of its more unpredictable moods — depressions tracking in from the west, strong spring tides funnelling through the Irish Sea, and wind that can clock from a promising southwesterly to a vicious northerly in a single watch.

The sea state builds quickly in these shallow, fetch-exposed waters, and the 1979 race remains an honest reminder of what the Celtic Sea is capable of giving you.

Day to day, you sail through some genuinely beautiful coastline you rarely get to appreciate properly. Rounding the Bishop Rock approaches, picking up the Lizard light, or watching the Fastnet lighthouse emerge through Atlantic swell at night — these are the moments sailors talk about for years.

Kinsale and Baltimore on the Cork coast make fine stops if you are delivering a boat west beforehand, both with solid provisioning and yards well used to offshore prep. Cowes itself is well serviced for charter; most competitors arrive with their own campaigns, but flotilla delivery skippers can base out of Hamble or Dartmouth for approach passages.

Paperwork is straightforward for UK and EU nationals, though non-EU crew should confirm Irish entry requirements in advance. The race is amateur-friendly at the back of the fleet, but this is serious offshore sailing — no passage for a novice crew regardless of the season or the forecast.

July and August give the longest daylight windows, but bring full foul-weather gear rated for 40-plus knots and crew with genuine offshore night-watch experience.
