The channel between Faial and Pico is one of those passages that stays with you long after you've tied up and ordered your first gin at Café Sport. The two islands sit roughly eight kilometres apart, and on any given afternoon the Pico massif rises 2,351 metres clean out of the Atlantic while you're still threading into Horta's marina. That approach never gets ordinary.

The dominant summer wind regime runs from the northwest, driven by the Azores High, and you'll find reliable force three to four most mornings, building to five in the afternoon channel chop – manageable but punchy if you're caught beam-on. Day passages between the two islands are easy enough that you can anchor off Madalena on Pico by lunchtime after a brisk morning crossing from Horta.

Horta marina is the traditional landfall for Atlantic circuit sailors, and the painted wall murals left by passing crews make it worth a slow walk even if you've just chartered locally. Provisioning is solid – Faial's supermarkets stock enough for a week's island hopping across São Jorge and Graciosa if you're ambitious.

Whale-watching excursions run from Horta throughout summer, and sperm whales are genuinely common; you may spot them from the boat without paying anyone a cent.

Charter logistics are straightforward. Several operators base small fleets in Horta, offering bareboat and skippered options from late May through September. As Portuguese territory, EU sailors need no special visa, and check-in paperwork is minimal. Night passages to the outer islands like Flores demand respect – Atlantic swell, shipping traffic, and limited harbours concentrate the mind considerably.

Go May to June for the calmest seas and fewest boats; avoid August if you dislike queuing for marina berths.
