Sailing Belize is a study in contrasts — inside the reef, the water turns that particular shade of jade green that makes you question your eyes, and beyond the barrier, the Caribbean blue drops away into the deep with almost theatrical drama.

The reef itself is the second longest in the world, and the lagoon it creates is your highway: flat, protected, and laced with mangrove cays where frigate birds hang motionless above your mast. Trade winds run reliably out of the east-northeast through the dry season, typically 12–18 knots, which means comfortable reaching passages between the cays with manageable afternoon chop.

Most charter boats base out of Belize City or Placencia, with Placencia the more convenient for heading straight south toward the Sapodilla Cayes and the Guatemalan border. Provisioning is functional rather than lavish — stock up properly before departure because cay villages sell cold beer and coconuts, not much else.

The Blue Hole is a day-passage offshore to Lighthouse Reef, and the anchorage at Half Moon Caye nearby is genuinely outstanding, with walls dropping to 40 metres for anyone who dives. Northward, Caulker and Ambergris offer lively bars and more reliable internet if you need to remind yourself the world still exists.

Belize is a former British colony, so officials are English-speaking and paperwork relatively painless — clear in at Belize City or San Pedro and carry your cruising permit. The real texture of the trip comes from the interior: you can dinghy up jungle rivers, hear howler monkeys at dusk, and day-trip to Mayan sites that most Caribbean sailors never encounter anywhere else.

Bareboat is very manageable here, but first-timers should hire a local guide for the Blue Hole passage; reef navigation demands concentration and good light.
