The Dominican Republic doesn't get the charter traffic that the Virgin Islands or Grenadines attract, and that relative quiet is precisely what makes it worth the extra planning effort.

The northeast trades blow reliably at 15–25 knots through the winter months, generally from the east-northeast, giving you a comfortable reach or broad reach when working westward along the north coast and a lively beat if you push back east — so most skippers plan their itinerary to progress downwind and arrange a vehicle transfer rather than fight the return.

Samaná Bay is the centrepiece: a wide, protected body of water ringed by green hills and mangrove channels, with enough fetch on a rough day to produce a short, choppy swell, but mostly calm enough for comfortable anchoring.

Between January and March, humpback whales gather here in extraordinary numbers to breed — you'll hear them before you see them, those long, low moans carrying under the hull — and day trips out with a licensed whale-watching operator run from Santa Bárbara de Samaná town.

The national park at Los Haitises is reachable by dinghy through flooded limestone karst draped in jungle, with cave paintings from the pre-Columbian Taíno people inside some of the caverns. It is genuinely spectacular.

Charter infrastructure is thin compared with neighbouring islands. Most skippers base out of Marina Puerto Bahía in Samaná or arrange deliveries from Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata. Provisioning is workable at local colmados and larger supermarkets in town, but bring specialised chandlery from home. Customs and immigration paperwork can be slow and occasionally requires an agent to smooth things along — budget an extra day and keep photocopies of everything.

Best avoided if you want easy bareboat logistics; December through March suits experienced charterers who travel light on expectation and heavy on patience.
